Proof of concept at a laboratory scale

Votion Biorefineries has demonstrated proof-of-concept of their proprietary process technology for the conversion of biomass to advanced biofuel in a feasibility study.

Three process steps were demonstrated:

  • Conversion of biomass to bio-oil
  • Demetallization of the bio-oil
  • Hydroprocessing of the demetallized oil

The results of these experiments showed that with Votion’s process, biomass can be converted into bio-oil at high yields without the formation of char and without residual solids. This feedstock-flexible process was used to produce bio-oil from bark and from lignin.

Demetallization of the bio-oils was demonstrated, improving the suitability of the oils for hydroprocessing.

Lastly, hydroprocessing with commercially available catalysts was successful in producing a final product with a high diesel yield.

The laboratory experiments were made possible by funding from the Swedish Energy Agency via Bio+ and The Industrial Leap (Industriklivet).

The next step for Votion is the construction of a pilot plant in 2023-2024 for further development and scale-up to commercialization.
